The Durham Black Educators’ Network (DBEN) seeks to recognize and celebrate the achievements of students in the Durham District School Board (DDSB) and highlight them as role models and leaders in the community. We understand that success does not happen by accident but with purposeful intention. We, educators, mentors, community members, must create opportunities to develop their skills so that youth are directed toward their paths of success.

The DBEN Cultivating Possibilities Awards are presented annually to DDSB students who identify as Black. In keeping with our vision of cultivating possibilities, students are recognized for their exemplary leadership both in school and in the community but are always encouraged to give back by taking part in and contributing to the next year’s events.
To date, there have been over 200 elementary and high school student applicants recognized for these awards, and over 60 scholarship winners since the original DBEN Activating Student Success Awards began in the 2012-2013 school year.
