Inspired by Baruti Kafele, distinguished a teacher, principal, author and speaker who came to Durham in October 2012, the Durham Black Educators’ Network established the Activating Student Success Awards to recognize outstanding leadership of students (grades 7 to 12) of the Black diaspora within Durham region.
These 11 awards seek to recognize students in Durham’s Black diaspora, who demonstrate leadership while maintaining strong academic performance. Since 2013, over 100+ students have been nominated and 50+ have been formally recognized by DBEN.
An annual event is held every year as a time for student celebration, encouragement. and to empower youth to strive for their dreams.
